Brad Gaddy of Marlen Research Corp. in Overland Park and Lafe Bailey of Wenger Manufacturing Inc. in Seneca traveled with MAMTC to Washington, DC on March 5th to meet with the Kansas Congressional delegation for the American Small Manufacturers Coalition (ASMC) Capitol Hill Day. They joined manufacturers from across the nation to support the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) program. MAMTC is the MEP center for Kansas.
The main goal of ASMC's annual Hill Day event is to update Congress on the success of the program and to support full funding for the next fiscal year.
One-third of MAMTC's annual budget comes from MEP funds. One-third comes from state funding through the Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation and the rest from client fees. Federal funds enable MAMTC to market its services and operate throughout the entire state.
The MEP is a network of 59 centers, with over 350 locations across the country and in Puerto Rico, providing technical assistance and business support services to America's small manufacturers. The private public program served nearly 32,000 companies in fiscal year 2008. In Fiscal year 2007, MEP helped create or retain over 57,000 jobs, generate more than $10 billion in sales and stimulate more than $2 billion in economic growth through increased investments in modernization.
In fiscal year 2008, MAMTC clients reported increased sales over $34.4 million, decreased costs by over $14 million, the creation and/or retention of 493 jobs and increased capital spending by nearly $20 million. For each federal dollar MAMTC received, clients reported $51 of economic impact.
